The Filgates spent nearly twenty years living near these lovely homes in the area of San Francisco known as Sea Cliff. Leonard actually painted similar versions twice before this, so this is the third Sea Cliff painting he created. Before painting this third version, he returned to the spot in Park Presidio to take some fresh photos as reference material. Originally, his photos had been taken in the 1980s and since that time it was clear that some houses had been remodeled and the trees grew larger, partially blocking this view.
